don cherry is an ignoranus. always been anti anything , but white anglo phone. has always disliked the euro influence, when it suits him. disliked anything franco phone, when it suits him.
just for the record, he trashed pavel bure when he played here in vancouver. he will never endorse alex o.
if a player like ovechkin, whos is by miles the most exciting hockey player today, who works his ass off every shift, who helps raise a very mediocre capitals club to prominence in the nhl, cant celebrate after a goal in his own fashion, the league will lack the briliant colour of its shining stars.
we are very passionate in canada about the game. we enjoy the history between canada and russia in the game. anfortunately, we have a couple of dummies like cherry that do nothing but disrespect others and spew thier garbage over the airwaves.

Hey. I strongly disagree with you, however I’ve already written extensively on this issue in the comments section here under the name ranndino (if you care to read my opinion in full):

Here I will only say that agree with most commenters on there and was glad to see that most Canadians think as I do. IMO, he already went too far and should be fired, but he’s not gonna be. It’s pathetic what kind of garbage he’s allowed to spew about Russian and European players. Had he said something like that about a black player (basically insinuating that Ovie should be taken out) he’d fired.

There’s nothing wrong with celebrating goals in a game as emotional as hockey is and players have done it for ages (back when Tiger Williams used to ride his stick like a horse after scoring). Don is just a xenophobic piece of shit who found something to complain about in regards to Ovechkin simply because he’s Russian. Ovie is a player everyone should model themselves after. He celebrates not to showboat, but out of genuine excitement. Maybe a showboat like Cherry can’t understand that.

People who have a problem with his celebrations must lead very sad, boring lives. Don Cherry is a complete hypocrite for doing so because he’s nothing, but attention whore with his ridiculous suits and equally ridiculous opinions.

BTW, Crosby who complained about Ovie’s celebrations in the piece shown during Coach’ Corner did the exactly same thing a couple of games later (jumping into the glass Ovie style). Another hypocrite.

Lastly, the celebrations they showed were from some of the biggest and most exciting goals that Ovie scored, a few from previous seasons. All of these goals were either OT game winners or coast to coast incredible rushes. It was completely disingenuous to show those as proof that Ovie does it every time, but then again I’d expect nothing else from a loudmouth, pathetic, hypocritical cockroach like Cherry.

I’m canadian and I hate Don Cherry with a passion. That being said, I actually agreed with him on the AO thing and I base that solely on just knowing that whenever anybody jumped around like that against my team I’d be pissed off. It’s fine when you’re scoring your first career goal or maybe a milestone goal but when you’ve already scored over 200 in your career and you’re still doing that….it’s a bit much. Still, AO is obviously the best player in the game and I’d still take him over Crosby any day of the week. Me and my friends will watch coaches corner just because we’re waiting for him to go over the top so they can finally fire him

I used to like Don Cherry and his no-nonsense style….HOWEVER, last nights HNIC comments about AO were over the top. First, the guy is not only excited about his own goals, but about every goal that is scored for his team. That is the way he plays. Pesonally, I think it is a treasure for anyone to love the game and express their love for the game as much as Alex does. Alex has more talent in his thumbnail than Cherry ever did.
Second, Cherry advocated someone take Alex’s legs out, essentially trying to “put a hit” on him. That is bushleague, not only does Cherry bend over to praise Sid on a regular basis, but it is just another example of Cherry’s fear of all things Russian.
